Interview with Morgenstern

After following them for several years, I just had to reach out to my favorite Rammstein tribute band, Morgenstern, and see if they wanted to do an interview. I'm so happy they said yes! What a fantastic interview! Make sure you check out their latest single, "Hass Ihn"!

Q: How did you all come together as a band?

A: The founder of the band is guitarist Alan Arrigo, who was thinking of putting a band together, but didn’t even know what and how. So, after seeing Rammstein live for the first time in 2010, he was blown away by the huge energy and sound of the live show. “I have never seen or heard anything like this before. Now I know what I want to do: I am going to put a Rammstein Tribute Band together!” And, crazy enough, he actually did! Morgenstern became the first Swiss Rammstein Tribute Band, and so far the only one. Morgenstern played tributes from 2010-2017 until the band started to write its own music and became the real thing in 2019 with the release of the debut album Mechamorphose.

Q: What is the most memorable or the best show you've played?

A: We think it is Rock The Rhy, as supporting act for Marc Storace (Ex Krokus). Best sound ever, and the audience was batshit crazy.

Q: What's your favorite tour snack?

A: Haribo Bear Gummies!

Q: Have you had any weird fan interactions?

A: Yes, at Rock The Rhy there was a guy that jumped on the stage fully naked because, he said, it’s something that he always wanted to try and our music was inspiring…

Q: Is it difficult to be seen as your own band when you started out as a tribute?

A: In the beginning, they loved us or hated us for the same reason. Some went totally crazy like: “How do they DARE to sound like Rammstein. There is only one GOD, and it’s Rammstein, anything else is just SACRILEGIOUS!” Yes, shit like that. But the vast majority was pleasently surprised: “Hey, these guys sound a little bit like Rammstein, only… more angry.” In fact, if we really wanna find some similarities, we were actually bringing back the sound of the early Rammstein or, better said, of the early Neue Deutsche Härte of the 90s, which is something that fans are somehow missing. And to be honest, we were missing it too. This is why we started to write our own music: we wanted to bring back the rage of the early 90s!

Q: What do you feel is the biggest challenge you're facing right now as a band?

A: We are growing. It takes time and energy to manage all the promotional stuff. We will soon need a secretary…

Q: What is your dream artist you wish to collaborate with?

A: We would love to share some shows with Maerzfeld or Eisbrecher, or other NDH Bands. But regarding music writing, we don’t want external influences for the moment, because we are still defining our own style.

Q: If you could pick one song to play for a potential new fan, which one would you pick?

A: Right now we can’t tell you because it is one of the six singles that we are releasing for the album, and it is not out yet! It’s goin to be single number five

Q: Are you working on anything new?

A: We are currently filming a new video… for above single!

Q: Do you have anything you want to tell your fans?

A: Yes, we love you!

Q: What Rammstein song do you feel is the most overrated?

A: None. There is nothing overrated that comes from Rammstein.

Q: Describe the moment when you decided that you wanted to make this kind of music.

A: Well, we were still a tribute band and during a break between shows we decided to write one song, only one song, to be played in our next Rammstein Tribute Show. But before we could do so, we already had three more songs ready. So we thought: “ok, let’s release a mini album as a sort of sideproject”. But before we had the album cover designed, the songs were already ten. So, at that point, we had to drop the mask and be honest with ourselves: we were no longer a tribute band, and maybe we nevere really were. We always had our own personality and it’s time to become the real thing. No regrets, somehow we knew that since the beginning.

Q: If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have?

A: Gasoline!
